Week commencing 8th June was a GREAT week for Converge Challenge alumni – past and present. Winners. Winners. Winners!  Let’s take a quick look back down memory lane!

2015 Edinburgh BioQuarter Innovation Competition – Tuesday 9th June 2015

WINNERS

DANIEL GOOD, a joint project between the University of Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt University and NHS Lothian, has developed a innovative device which diagnoses prostate cancer using the stiffness of the prostate – aiming to improve the speed and accuracy of prostate cancer detection. Daniel is also the recent Converge Elevator Pitch competition winner.

Dr RAMYA BHATIA, University of Edinburgh, has developed a novel triage test to reduce the number of women with Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection who are referred for an unnecessary colposcopy.

Both are Converge Challenge 2015 finalists and each won £7,500 to help develop their business concept.

RUNNERS UP

Innovation Cup runners-up positions were taken by Dr RICHARD WALKER from Photon Force who make sensors that detect single photons and Dr MIKE MANGAN from Skyline Sensors who has developed a patent-pending sensor technology which allows segmentation of the sky in an image.

Enterprise Award runners-up prizes were awarded to HANNAH DIMSDALE of Teadough; the original donut kit and ANDREW HARKINS from Turtle Pack and innovative swimming aid for teaching new swimmers.

Each are 2015 Converge or KickStart finalists and receive £1,000 towards developing their business.

Scottish EDGE Round 6 Awards – Friday 12th June

A total of £217,500 was award to Converge alumni at the ScotEDGE‪ #‎EDGEFinal6 at RBS Gogarburn. 26 finalists pitched on the day with 6 of our applicants taking away funding.  The list of Converge alumni and the amount in which they received are listed below:

KANIKA BANSAL, Medicen Devise Limited – £65,000 – A company which developed a new medical sterilised catheter device called “Steriderm”

DAVID HUNTER, Shot Scope Technologies Ltd – £50,000 – wearable technology that automatically collects scoring and statistical data for golfers

VICKY HAMILTON, VH Innovation Ltd – £65,000 – designed the “Recoil Kneepad” – new more comfortable and protective kneepad design

YoungEDGE WINNERS

KANIKA BANSAL, Medicen Devise Ltd – £10,000 – Developed a new medical sterilised catheter device called “Steriderm” (second win!!)

CHRISTOPHER MCCANN, snap40 Ltd – £7,500 –  Device that detects the early warning signs of patient deterioration which can lead to cardiac arrest (NOTE – 2014 KickStart winner)

WildcardEDGE WINNERS

FIONA MITCHELL, SafeSpot Ltd –  £10,000 – SafeSpot mobile app – mental health education programme designed for children and young adults

TIM WILLIS, Nautilus Beam Ltd – £10,000 – Smartwatch that allows for smarter, faster and more portable text input (NOTE – class of 2015 finalist)
